Mt. St. Helens Excursion

Mt. St. Helens
At 8:32 Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted. Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the north face of this tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in the world's largest recorded landslide followed by a tremendous lateral explosion, which ripped through the avalanche sending a 300-mile per hour, 600 hundred-degree stone filled wind to level some 230 square miles of forest. At the same time a mushroom-shaped column of ash rose to 80,000 feet (18 kilometers) in 15 minutes and reached the east coast in 3 days. Although most of the ash fell within 300 miles of the mountain finer ash circled the earth in 15 days.

On the excursion you will have many photo opportunities as we stop at viewpoints and interpretive centers on our way the Johnston Observatory. We will also provide boxed lunches for your dining pleasure, and a naturalist will step on the coach while touring the scenic highways of the park. The naturalist will point out and expand on the unique qualities of the Mt. St. Helens National Park as well as answer any questions you may have about the park.
